Growing is our favourite theme. It’s integrated into everything we do and promote - from personal growth to the food we eat. Everything should grow.
GROWcery Programs
Polinator Promotion
All grown food needs the support of native pollinators. The GFNS Pollinator Program includes building, installing, maintaining and educating in support of Mason bees and other native pollinator species. We can’t wait to show you where our bee homes will be located! We have also begun supporting community initiatives to create new pollinator gardens. Learn about our latest garden in Sapperton Park, New Westminster and other projects.
Food Is Free
Have you heard of the Food is Free movement? The easiest way to distribute excess garden-grown produce is to let those who pass by know what can be taken. A green flag means “free to harvest”, a yellow flag means “take up to 1/2 the crop” and a red flag means “please don’t harvest”. This simple identification plan can make all community and shared garden spaces a part of a food security plan. Borrowing from the community lending library concept, we also promote the idea of a seedling & plant library. Learn more about this program here.
Little GROWers
We are passionate about engaging children and providing opportunities for them to grow food. We are members of the C&NN (Children and Nature Network) and love to learn and share their resources. for 20/21 we are refurbishing and planting some Tot Plots at a local community centre. We can’t involve the kids during these times, but we can make sure they have fun food to pick and a beautiful space to visit. More info
Thrive for Good LifeGarden in Kenya
We utilize the online learning resources of the Thrive Institute in some of our programming and take great pleasure in sponsoring a LifeGarden in Africa. Making this connection between our program participants feels full circle; an opportunity to return some of the value we get from the people also learning food security skills over seas. With our focus so local, it’s exciting we can support and honour an organization whose food security efforts we greatly admire.
Job Creation Partnership
Have you heard of a community garden? have you heard of a therapeutic garden? Have you heard of a therapeutic community garden? We feel like we are part of the new wave of food security promotion by building a community food production asset with an integrated therapeutic model. We were able to create this space through a Job Creation Partnership which is a program with the province’s Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. Learn more about it here.

Working Experiences Opportunities
Our larger working project provide ancillary opportunities for members of the community that can’t access traditional working options. Supported by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, we are connecting community members to our projects. 2021 begins with 5 New Westminster residents associated with 2 partner organizations who will be gaining new groundskeeping and gardening skills.
